Preston School of Industry to Return Friday, May 9th , 5:50 PM

When Pavement split up, Steve Malkmus got the attention and Spiral Stairs got to keep his cool name. Scott Kannberg (aka Spiral Stairs) formed the Preston School of Industry after Pavement dissolved. The band has periodically released albums (2001 and 2004) and disappear. Mr. Stairs have announced plans for another reemergence in 2008.

“all has been quiet on the psoi front... until now! a new record is in the works, hopefully done by the end of spring, a new website (still working on it, obviously), and the most exciting of all... we're playing shows again! we've been asked to support the posies for their 20th anniversary show in seattle may 17th. we're excited, since we still like the posies very much (even if the drummer is a weird rush fan). we're also playing a bunch of new songs... as well as some old family favorites,” Kannberg said on the PSOI website.

Kannberg also mentioned that PSOI is doing a “collaboration” with members of the Broken Social Scene. More details to come but since there are approximately 200 members of BSS, everybody who is even just Canadian could say that they’re collaborating with them.

My Morning Jacket Offer Legal Urges Friday, May 9th , 5:18 PM

My Morning Jacket will be on Saturday Night Live this weekend (guess what day?) and to help promote that appearence, they are offering up the title track of their new album Evil Urges (June 10th) for free download.

Remember when bands would release a single weeks before the album’s release on a poorly put together cassette tape that cost 99 cents? Or even on 7”? Now it’s all ‘right-click, save as’.

Get off my lawn you damn kids.

Donnie Darko Part Deus ex Machina Friday, May 9th , 4:36 PM

Last we left Donnie Darko, he wasn’t doing so well. On top all his troubles, there have been announced plans for a stage production of the 2001 film and starting in a little over a week, production on Donnie Darko 2: Where Donnie At?.

Filming on S.Darko will begin on May 18th and picks up where the original left off. “Little sister Samantha Darko and her best friend Corey are now 18 and on a roadtrip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions,“ like a sign for gas under 4 f’n dollars. Original DD writer / director Richard Kelly is not involved in any official way causing skeptics to rightfully remain skeptical.

It is unknown if the rest of Sparkle Motion will accompany Samantha Darko to LA and whether or not the film will culminate in a “dance-off”.

You know what they say, the next best thing to going to Coachella is listening to sets on a set of tiny computer speakers.

The list of available downloads has expanded and then no more Coachella talk until next year.

How Much of Your Life Has Been Wasted? Friday, May 9th , 2:29 PM

Remember before Tivos when you'd have to actually sit through TV theme songs and before long you had amassed quite a collection of memorized songs to sing in the shower or crowded elevator?

Find out if you remember as much as you think you do. Here's a tip: there weren't any curse words in the Growing Pains theme song.

Name That Theme Song

DCFC Manage To Stay Awake While Describing New Album Friday, May 9th , 12:16 PM

Death Cab for Cutie are getting ready to release their 6th album, Narrow Stairs, next week and recently spoke with Current TV in a documentary (labeled as such because it’s f’n long) called Open Windows.

All Death Cabbers were questioned and were able to give their takes on each track off of Narrow Stairs. Verdict = they like it. The band holed up in Seattle preparing for the tour (that they just kicked off) and filmed going through the normal “what if nobody comes” pre-tour jitters.

Ways to Get Hit By a Train #3,201 Friday, May 9th , 11:46 AM

Tired of putting in earbuds therefore robbing everyone else on the bus of hearing the excellent music you are listening to? Now you don’t have to go another day without making those around you uncomfortable.

The “hood.e” was developed by Tim Dubitsky as a gift for his nephew who likes to listen to music and “walks a dangerous route to school crossing busy thoroughfares”. Tim’s nephew will be able to hear his attackers and robbers approaching now whereas before they would’ve taken him completely by surprise.

Those interested can visit here and also search for the “what to do” if mom throws it in the wash.

Enigk – Jurado Megatour Coming Soon Thursday, May 8th , 5:48 PM

You know what? I listened to Diary all last weekend. Stop laughing; it’s a good sentimental trip down geeky / awkward lane. Whatever happened to former SDRE frontman Jeremy Enigk? He found God (always the last place you look) and took off for solo pursuits. He’s even got an album scheduled for some unclear date in ’08. Isn’t that great? It must be his fate. Knowing him it will probably be late, which I would totally hate.

Enigk has confirmed a trip on the road though and he’s tackling the middle and right side of the US with s / sw Damien Jurado (who has a new album due via Secretly Canadian this fall) guaranteeing a very uproarious double bill.
