• Richard Hell

Long before every musician felt entitled to be a film actor too, it was a good way to make some extra scratch. Punk legend Richard Hell (Television, Dim Stars, Richard Hell & the Voidoids, Neon Boys, Heartbreakers) figured that out and started popping up in a number of 80’s films Smithereens, Blank Generation, Geek Maggot Bingo, What About Me? Final Rewind and most notably appearing in Madonna’s Desperately Seeking Susan. Don’t count on seeing him smiling come credit role or hearing him speak but it is most definitely the lanky Hell getting the business from that Madonna lady.

• Tom Waits

It is extremely difficult to have such a revered catalog of music and to be able to act in films of your choosing (as in no guest roles in movies like Wanted). Tom Waits is continuing on with not only a celebrated music career but also has accumulated impressive list of film credits. Waits has had roles in a handful of Jarmusch films (Mystery Train, Down By Law, Coffee and Cigarettes) as well as appearing in Short Cuts, Wristcutters: A Love Story, The Outsiders, The Fisher King, the upcoming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and had a small role in Francis Ford Coppola’s One From the Heart (Waits also got nominated for an Oscar…that’s right…for his music from that film).

• Dean Wareham

Some musicians have quietly appeared in a number of “art” films causing viewers to ask “was that …?” then the inevitable pause, rewind, imdb check. Luna’s Dean Wareham is one of those actors. He’s has his written music show up in films like the Squid & Whale, Margot at the Wedding, the Myth of Fingerprints and Sideways as well as appearing as an actor in indies Mr. Jealously, Piggie, Pumpkin Hell and even an episode of Law & Order that you’ve probably seen a few hundred times (if you can manage to find the show on cable).

• Eugene Hutz

He’s still building his acting reel but Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hutz has already appeared in a handful of films, most notably a brief speaking role in actor Liev Schreiber’s Everything Is Illuminated.

• The Cast of Half Cocked

Yes it’s in black and white, yes it does run a little slow and yes it is full of in-jokes but the Half-Cocked cast is made up of members of Rodan, Retsin, The Grifters, Nation of Ulysses, Lungfish, Sonora Pine and the Make-Up. While not a perfect film, it is entertaining to watch these normally reserved musicians trying to play somewhat extroverted characters. Besides that, there are some great performances and a great soundtrack leading to many of the actors performing double / triple duty.

Was just flipping through my vinyl tonight and saw the Half-Cocked soundtrack. Never got to see the actual film, but the soundtrack is great (and the vinyl is a double-LP with more songs than the CD).

• Hugh Dillon

(blatantly stolen from wikipedia)

Music career

Dillon was the lead singer for the Kingston hard rock band The Headstones from 1987 until 2003. The Headstones became one of the most commercially successful Canadian bands of the 1990s.[citation needed]

After The Headstones broke up in 2003, Dillon formed the band Hugh Dillon Redemption Choir, an indie rock band whose style draws from country, pop, punk and New Wave influences. They released The High Co$t of Low Living in 2005. Their second album, Works Well with Others, is scheduled for release in 2008.

Dillon was the record producer for an album by Canadian rockers The Rubbers, and he has scored and written compositions for various television productions.

[edit] Acting career

Dillon landed his first big screen part in director Bruce McDonald's Dance Me Outside (1995). Next came his critically acclaimed lead performance as Joe Dick in McDonald's 1996 feature film, Hard Core Logo. The film caught the eye of filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, and his company, Rolling Thunder Pictures, distributed the movie, bringing international attention to the film.

Dillon went on to build a repertoire of notable roles in feature films, including Lone Hero, also starring Robert Forster and Sean Patrick Flanery, 2005's Assault on Precinct 13 with Ethan Hawke, and Ginger Snaps: The Beginning. In 2007 he was nominated for a 2007 Genie Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Trailer Park Boys: The Movie. He received critical acclaim when he starred opposite Vera Farmiga (The Departed) in the Sundance Film Festival award-winning movie, Down to the Bone. Dillon has guest-starred on numerous television programs, such as The 11th Hour, Regenesis, Degrassi: The Next Generation. He also does the voice-overs for Canadian Chevrolet ads, both on TV and radio.

Dillon starred as Mike Sweeney in the critically acclaimed Canadian mini-series Durham County. Durham County follows the tormented life of Detective Mike Sweeney, a world-weary homicide detective, who moves with his wife Audrey (Hélène Joy, ReGenesis) and daughters Sadie (Laurence Leboeuf) and Maddie (Cecily Austin) to a seemingly idyllic suburban community in the hopes of a new beginning.

Dillon is currently starring in the CTV/CBS co-production police drama series Flashpoint as Ed Lane[1]. The one-hour drama series also stars Enrico Colantoni (Veronica Mars) and David Paetkau, and follows the tough but emotional lives of an elite Strategic Response Unit that is clearly set in Toronto through the many establishing shots, but never explicitly stated in the show. The series was picked up by CBS for broadcast later this year in the United States, making it the first Canadian series since CTV's Due South in 1994 to air on network primetime in both Canada and the United States.

Richard Hell is great. He is very under appreciated. The same goes for Johnny Thunders. Why won't Scarlett Johansson cover their songs?

I also know nothing from any of those folks, though I've seen Desperately Seeking Susan, The Outsiders, and probably that Law & Order episode. And yes, I still call myself a music fan.

Lee Ving

The singer/guitarist from the LA Punk band FEAR played the character of a nihilist redneck every time the band performed on stage. This led to plenty of toughguy roles in Streets of Fire (biker), Flashdance (strip club owner), and an episode of Who's The Boss? (rocker), though he was probably most famous for playing Mr. Boddy in Clue: The Movie. Or maybe he was Mr. Boddy's butler.

I recognize half of these people, and have heard a collective three of their songs, only one of which whose title I can remember (whistling in a grave yard or some shit by Tom Waits.)

Why do I continue to hang out with you homos?
