Stereogum have continued with their tribute series (first was Radiohead’s OK Computer then R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People) and have just completed Enjoyed, their tribute to Bjork’s 1995 album Post.
Offering up interpretations of songs from Post are No Age, Final Fantasy and Ed Droste, Xiu Xiu, Atlas Sound, Dirty Projectors, Bell, Liars, and a few others. The contributing bands also offered their thoughts and submitted to the liner notes of the digital album, letting you know what the Icelandic pixie means to them.
When asked for comment Bjork said “aaaaarrrggghhhh” and proceeded to beat up a reporter.
Out of the 700 “Wolf” bands that popped up around 2005, only a few are still kicking. One such survivor is Wolf Parade who are now releasing info about their follow up to ‘05’s Apologies to Queen Mary. But not too much info.
Wolf Parade will release Kissing the Beehive on June 17th in North America (shortly followed by release in the UK). The band will most likely tour the US and Canada following Beehive’s release but so far the only dates confirmed are the already announcedMay 15 – 22nd 8 dates in the UK and Ireland.
After 14 years of operation, Resonance Magazine is being forced to close up shop.
According to the quarterly magazine: “In January 2008, immediately before going to press with our 55th issue, we were forced to stop printing Resonance. The financial challenge of publishing an independent magazine finally overwhelmed us. Fueled by the tireless support of many people (readers, subscribers, staff, freelancers, advertisers, publicists, as well as long-suffering spouses and significant others), we stubbornly survived on a shoestring budget and volunteer staff for 14 years. Such a business model isn't sustainable forever.”
Resonance Magazine focused on the lesser, somewhat unknown artists they felt were making important art. Many artists received their first U.S. magazine cover thanks to Resonance (Goldfrapp, MIA, Bobby Conn, Dan Deacon, Octopus Project, etc.). Publisher Andrew Monko also fondly remembers the “outrageous stunt” the magazine collaborated on with NJ’s Yo La Tengo in 2000. “Yo La Tengo conspired with us to do a cover photo shoot, not of the band themselves, but with three unknown impersonators instead: a trio of attractive, young Latin models. The cover's headline read: "The sexy makeover of a hot Latin trio." Most readers got the joke, others believed the models were the band. Yo La Tengo's record label Matador responded with a cease-and-desist letter from their attorney that threatened legal action for misrepresenting their artists, citing "gross non-compliance of the fair-use agreement regarding Yo La Tengo imagery." We published the letter in the following issue. Many readers, Resonance staff, and Matador fans were alarmed that such a credible indie label would be so devoid of humor. Well ... they're not. The legal threat was also a joke, kept secret until now”.
Goodbye Resonance, guess people don’t read anymore.
Not too long ago, it was commonplace for bands and bad comedians to yell from the stage “don’t forget to tip your bartender”. With that statement’s disappearance, so it seems did a majority of the tips.
When asked how to tell if it’ll be a good night for tips, Bowery Ballroom bartender Amy Korb said “When your night starts out with ‘What’s your cheapest drink?’ that’s (also) not good.” According to Korb, “In a music venue, like-minded people get together. They like the same music, they like the same liquor. They also seem to have been socialized together, and they usually tip the same.”
So that leaves the all important question of what bands bring the best tippers? According to Korb, the hard rocking, hard drinking and hard loving bands like Priestess and Bogmen. The stingiest? Fans of dance punk bands like Chromeo like the cheap, cheap booze and can’t be counted on for tips (hey, trust funds eventually run out!). “When Chromeo played, their crowd drank house vodka and Budweiser. Didn’t tip. Some of them did what I’ll call the slide-backs. They put a dollar down on the bar, wait until you turn your back, then palm their buck and walk away. Classy.”
There’s no word as to whether or not bar managers have considered leaving patrons with more tipping money by lowering the $9 price of tiny mixed drinks.
Those sitting down for their daily 3a.m. Fox News viewing might’ve been a little curious who the nice young man in the suit jacket being interviewed on the show Red Eye was. Any hipsters who fell asleep with the TV on were most likely like "no more spicy food before bed, I'm seeing craziness on the TV".
Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks have a fan in Fox News’ Red Eye host Greg Gutfield who recently invited former Pavement leader / fantasy baseball enthusiastStephen Malkmus on his show for a lighthearted interview resulting in the most truthful segment ever to air on Fox News.
Malkmus appeared to promote the Jicks new album Real Emotional Trash and was given a big boost by Gutfield who proclaimed “you should buy it or die”. The interview also gets down to business and sets the record straight on what a “Jick” is (not what you’re thinking) and whether or not Malkmus feels he was at least partially responsible for actress Cate Blanchett’s Oscar nomination. Gutfield also points out that a 10 minute song is “long,” which no one had the balls to tell Malkmus while they were recording.
Still can’t get enough Juno? For the one or two of you that are raising your hands, you’re in luck.
Juno B-Sides: Almost Adopted Songs will be released on iTunes April 8th and elsewhere digitally on May 13th and features songs that were cut out of the film but are essential parts of the “Junoverse” (according to director Jason Reitman). Songs included on the album include tracks by Kimya Dawson (yes, even more), Barry Louis Polisar, Belle and Sebastian, Buddy Holly, Yo La Tengo and Jr. James & the Late Guitar, the Bristols, Trio Los Panchos and Astrud Gilberto.
Star of the film Ellen Page also sings again with the song “Zub Zub” which was penned by Juno writer Diablo Cody meaning the song is most likely be filled with lyrics made up of imagined teenage-speak with continuous references to the writer’s past as a stripper.
If you couldn’t find your way out of the house or couldn’t justify paying to rent it, there’s still a chance for you to see Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters(/DVD / Internet) for free in the privacy of your own shanty.
The full movie filmis currently being offered for free. Just don’t watch it in Boston. They’re still a little weary of these guys.
The workhorse that are the Breeders are for some reason releasing an album next month. Early reviews have been
positive but the skeptical meter remains on skeptical until it is actually heard. If only there were some way to hear Mountain Battles before it is released on April 8th.
The Breeders have got your back. Instead of having the normal listening parties in various cities where amateur critics get drunk and pretend to listen to the album, The Breeders have opened up the experience for everyone. Mountain Battles is currently streamingin its entirety. The allowance of full album streams seems to be the way web2008 is intent on defeating “leaks” and torrents.
If your shut-in status is getting you down and you need to do something public with the Breeders, they are currently on the road.
Ladytron, the Beatles of androgynous electronic pop based dance music are coming back with a new album this June. On the 6th of that month the band will be releasing their 4th studio album Velocifero.
Critics and fans have are typically pro-Ladytron as they are a little more experimental than what normally falls under the ‘electronic’ umbrella. The band gets their sound from the dedication to vintage analogue instruments so you can imagine the Sterolab comparisons though Ladytron is much dancier / less French.
Ladytron are on the road now and have dates scheduled with Datarock.
