Last night the famed Butthole Surfers played NYC’s Webster Hall and wouldn’t you know it, things got out of hand. The band was playing NYC for the first time in about 7 years and after playing for over 90 minutes, head Butthole Gibby Haynes started arguing with a sound guy on the side of the stage.
According to a witness “He then went over to harass the sound guy, and was warned repeatedly by security. The scene erupted when Gibby reportedly threw a punch (or a bottle) at the sound guy, which may or may not have broken his nose. I didn't see the punch thrown, but I certainly saw him get escorted off the stage, which prompted the inevitable bottle throwing from the crowd.”
The remaining Butthole Surfers finished playing the interrupted song and left the stage with “lots of applause and high fives to the front row”. The lights stayed low and the crowd began stuck around and chanted, fully expecting an encore (note to everyone: can we please go back to not expecting an encore and being surprised when we get one? k thx) and growing quite unruly when it appeared they wouldn’t be getting one.
Another witness said“The only people who came back to the stage though, were big security guards, and the occasional School of Rock kid to clean up some gear. Then all of a sudden Genesis P-Orridge saunters on stage and strangely had people shouting louder, but was also telling people to be silent. Security then pulled Genesis off the stage and more and more security filled it up. Finally the video guy came back to grab his laptop and turn off the projections (which by the way had still been running along with background music that whole time). The lights were also still off. I was close to the video guy and he was one who told me the show was over because Gibby got arrested.”
Apparently Haynes was not arrested, he showed up for an afterparty DJ gig at the Beauty Bar. Could this all have been a clever ruse? James Brown like theatrics?
The Tom Waits Glitter and Doom Tour rambles on (he’s in Dublin now) and at least stateside, many fans were disappointed at the few and out there the seldom touring Waits played. He claimed to be following the star constellation PEHDTSCKJMBA, hitting up Phoenix, El Paso, Houston, Dallas, Tulsa, St. Louis, Columbus, Knoxville, Jacksonville, Mobile, Birmingham and Atlanta.
The last stop on the PEHDTSCKJMBA dates, Atlanta, was visited by Waits & Co. on July 5th. The Fox Theater show was recorded and is being offered via NPR’s Live Concerts from All Songs Considered Podcast. Since I’m passing on the link, I’m gonna require all users to pay me a $10 "convenience" charge. Hey everybody else does it.

There was once a time when La Blogotheque (aka Takeaway Shows) did not exist. You just kind of had to assume that your favorite band could actually play outside of the studio. Not in 2008; seriously, we’re slowly getting to Jetsons-esque technology.
La Blogotheque have been filming bands in incredibly intimate performances and have captured some unbelievably excellent performances so far. The next to take a crack at one of these shows is Swedish singer Lykke Li and El Perro Del Mar. The two took to the streets of San Francisco for performances of “After Laughter (Comes Tears),” “Somebody’s Baby,” and “Dance Dance Dance”.
Famed producer Steve Lillywhite began producing the Lillywhite Sessions for NPR’s World Café earlier this year and already has had a number of notable appearances (She & Him, Goldfrapp). Lillywhite can now add Sub Pop’s Fleet Foxes to the list.
The band just performed at NYC’s Avatar Recording Studios for Lillywhite and if you weren’t tuned into NPR for it, you’re not out of luck. You can stream Fleet Foxes’ Lillywhite produced performances of “White Winter Hymnal,” “Blue Ridge Mountains,” and “Tiger Mountain Peasant Song” over at NPR’s site.
Bands need to evolve and change in order to continue to exist. While these changes are often first unwelcomed (Dylan went electric!), often times it ends up being for the best.
The next band to shake things up are the Kings of Leon. The band first showed up in 2003 with a dirty, southern rock tinged swagger and have evolved into…I don’t know what to call this. Kings of Leon will be releasing their 4th album, Only by the Night, on September 23rd and a song from the album, “Crawl,” has made its way to the internet. It may take a little getting used to for fans used to the traditional Kings of Leon sound.
To download the track, the band needs your email address and they promise to cool it with the forwards and youtube links.

The Bad Side: It’s only 1 weekend and only 1 location (Chicago August 1-3), festival food prices, Blues Traveler
Lollapalooza has had its ups and downs since starting in 1991 and has gone through many changes. Lollapalooza v. 2008 comes to Chicago’s Grant Park on August 1-3 with a very impressive, eclectic lineup. We are no longer spoiled like the children of the 90’s (who expected Perry Farrell & Co. to show up on their doorsteps) and now the only thing preventing you from a Lollapalooza weekend is a trip to Chicago. And possibly a place to stay.
Xiu Xiu released their 6th album Women As Lovers in January and have been touring behind it since. The band revisits North America in August for a brief fall tour. If someone tells you that they have seen Xiu Xiu live and not enjoyed themselves, back away slowly.
Brooklyn via Minnesota’s the Hold Steady came out with their 4th album this summer. Stay Positive was just released last week and the band wasted no time in jumping on the road. The Hold Steady started their tour on Monday and will continue through mid-August in the UK.
You may have heard of Radiohead and if so, you may be aware that many liken their live show to a religious experience. Getting tickets is typically an adventure but if you can score them for select August dates, you get the added bonus of openers Liars.
The Canadian supergroup that is the Broken Social Scene don’t have new material on the way (no studio big enough) but the band will be hitting a number of festivals this summer. Throughout August, if there’s a festival, BSS will most likely be there. You could also walk around said festivals convincing people that you’re in BSS. How would they know you’re lying?
TV on the Radio will be back in September with a new album, Dear Science (Attn bands: no more use of "Dear" or "Deer". It's getting out of control). To mark the occasion, the band will be hitting the road for most of September. So far the dates are sparse but there’s a strong possibility that more dates will be added.
Blog favorites the Cold War Kids are back in September with their 2nd album, Loyalty to Loyalty. Even though they gained a large portion of new fans via the internet, the band sees value in face to face meetings. Starting in early August, the band begins residing almost solely on stages across the world.
Do you seriously want to be on your deathbed and have to explain to your loved ones that you never saw Motorhead live even though you had the chance? Those loved ones would probably slap you in the face if you did. Or you could be like the guy in the phone commercial who plays pool instead of seeing Motorhead and spends the rest of his life (the commercial) regretting it. Motorhead’s 20th(!) album, Motörizer comes out next month and take note lazy bands, the older, wiser and more road torn Motorhead hit the road in August with dates scheduled throughout the rest of ’08.
What’s the difference between Bright Eyes and Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band? Just the marquee outside the shows; the “leaked” tracks sound pretty much the same as Oberst’s Bright Eyes. Oberst and Co. will release his solo debut, Conor Oberst, next month and plan on hitting the road this week with dates planned throughout November to promote.
Guys, go and ladies will find you sensitive. Ladies, go to meet sensitive guys. Everybody wins! What a country!
Yes they can be outspoken and quite ornery but Scotland’s Mogwai have also been one of the most consistent bands of the past few years. The band will release their 6th album, The Hawk Is Howling on September 22nd and will embark on a lengthy tour come August. The band has scheduled dates throughout November and in September will be pairing with the equally excellent duo Fuck Buttons for a number of dates.
I’ve just been kindly pointed in the direction of SnagFilms, a site that hosts full length documentaries and allows visitors to watch them for free. I was thinking it was going to be a bunch of old Nova specials from 1985 but right now up there you can watch Dig!, Super Size Me and Darkon and about 222 others (and growing).
Remember paying to rent movies? Rewinding tapes? Late fees? That hot goth chick who used to work at the video store? Wonder what she's doing now.
The busy members of Grizzly Bear are getting ready begin opening shows for Radiohead next month but have also been accumulating new material. The plan is for a trip into the studio this fall for a hopeful April ’09 release for the follow up to 2006’s Yellow House.
What’s the plan for new Grizzly Bear? The band’s Ed Droste said that the new stuff is “sunnier” than the ones on Yellow House. “The mood is slightly more a sunny afternoon versus a fall afternoon," Droste told Billboard.
Grizzly Bear stopped by Dave Letterman’s show this week and premiered the new “Two Weeks”. Sunny is a very fair description. So is “what the hell was that?” Hopefully someone shorts the band members some change or steps on their toes to help them gain some of that comforting darkness back.
Remember how your Mom told you that the hoverboards from Back to the Future II weren’t real so you have better stop asking for one? Well she lied to you. Well, kind of.
One of the hoverboards used by Teen Wolf in Back to the Future II is being auctioned off on eBay. While not exactly how it was portrayed in the film (i.e. it don’t hover) the wood prop is the legit board from the film.
The auction cautions “The illusion of Michael J. Fox as ‘Marty McFly’ hovering through the air was achieved with practical effects, with actors in rigged harnesses being ‘flown’ via cranes, with special effects taking care of the rest.” The auction is starting at a cool $30,000 so maybe you pick up yet another paper route this summer?
The eBay auction does not go on to explain if you’ll be s.o.l. if the little girl MJ Fox stole it from comes back to collect.
We’re still about 2 months away from the Cold War Kids attempt to beat the dreaded ‘overly blogged about band’ backlash. The band will release Loyalty to Loyalty on September 23rd and there have already been a few samples released.
A track from the album, “Something Is Not Right With Me,” is currently being critiquedand let me just say, the best way to offset a chugging bass is with a ladylike falsetto only a man could provide.
