Last night comedian Sacha Baron Cohen crashed the Agatha Ruiz de la Prada's fashion show in Milan by walking the catwalk in character as "Bruno" to promote his new film "Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Male."

Dude kills me every time.

It's not often I wake up to 15 missed calls and 20 text messages these days... In fact I would say it never happens anymore. But something happened last night in NYC that warranted it. Something that triggered memories, blew minds, and made everyone want to talk to everyone else before, during, and after... MBV apparently fucking destroyed NYC last night, and I'm wondering why the hell I didn't go.

From Billboard:

"They came, they played, they conquered. Actually, they destroyed. Or maybe they did something to us that we can't really even describe. Whatever happened, My Bloody Valentine's performance last night in New York is already going down as the most affecting thing that a lot of people have ever experienced."

Anthony Pappallardo and Nathan Nedorostek just finished what might be the most intellectual and personal look at American Hardcore... ever.

It's called "Radio Silence: A Selected Visual History of American Hardcore Music" and it rips. By gathering interviews, photos, zines, clippings, home-made t-shirts, flyers, and other ephemera from personal collections of hardcore kids focusing on the years between 1978-1993, this look into the often misunderstood space between punk and grunge ... into the real blood and sweat of a subculture at it's dawn is both moving and nostalgic. If the American Hardcore film was "Black Flag", then this book is "Antioch Arrow" or "Embrace". I hope that analogy works for you.

You aren't reading a dude's opinion on a "scene", rather, this book makes you feel like you're experiencing a memory - with contributions from the people that lived it (among them Dave Smalley, Jeff Nelson, etc).

There is an all ages release party and show (Mind Eraser is playing) on October 3rd in NYC, and selected photography from the book will be on display at Riviera gallery in Brooklyn through the end of October.

For more info on the book, the party, and the opening, click here: www.radiosilencebook.com

This will either mean a lot to you, make you laugh, or sicken you - either way, it's happening. Absolute Punk had it up today via "fans report". Apparently at the Reggie and The Full Effect show in Chicago recently, Dewees confirmed that a Get Up Kids reunion is not a rumor but in fact true, complete with a Spring Tour planned for 2009.

Legendary game creator Will Wright (you might know him, he created a little title called The Sims) has finally released the long awaited Spore, a game that ushers the player through 5 sand-boxy worlds where you begin as a microscopic amoeba and eventually evolve into a space-traveling creature. With millions of possibilities in the Creature Creator (and millions of players sharing their creatures online) this game could be the perfect time sink to distract every kid during their crucial "back to school" season -- at least until the World of Warcraft expansion is released on November 4th, right during exams! *Evil Laugh*

Have any of you played this yet, or downloaded the free Spore Creature Creator trial? If so, share some of your creature pics with us!

(I still remember the ridiculously offensive shit my friend Andy did with Sims and photoshop back in the day...)

So Chrome came out, and like many geeks I had trouble concealing my chrome-bone as I browsed the web experiencing the quick new "V8" engine that admittedly rendered many pages a shit-ton quicker than IE and Firefox could...

More Info Here.

But amidst my tech orgy, and at the pinnacle of my browsing "O-Face", my good friend JW pointed out that perhaps I should take a closer look at the EULA before ruining my shorts.

Good call - Gizmodo has run an article entitled "Google Chrome EULA Claims Ownership of Everything You Create on Chrome, From Blog Posts to Emails" That seems rather clear to me - but is it true? Peep the article, check out chrome, read the EULA for yourself and tell me what you think...

Googles in ur nets, stealin ur words -- possibly on it's way to becoming Big Brother... put fuck, they make great product.

Back before every major beer company had an all day music festival and bands were limited to only 20 minute performances, Lollapalooza was one of the only traveling circuses providing a whole day of music in towns throughout North America.

Started by Jane’s Addiction’s Perry Farrell in 1991 (waaaaaaay back when before the term “alternative” was invented to sell hair dye), Lollapalooza put together 2, sometimes 3, stages of varied bands typically bubbling just above “underground” status. The festival’s main stage though was often the stage used to sell the tickets with the more mainstream Nine Inch Nails, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Primus, Alice in Chains, Tool, Rage Against the Machine, Smashing Pumpkins, the Beastie Boys and Green Day all sharing spots on the main stage from 1991 – 1994 (Nirvana was supposed to headline in 1994 but pulled out right before Kurt elected to retire permanently).

Lollapalooza got mad at selling tickets and decided to put together their most anti-mainstream festival to date in 1995. Beloved noise band Sonic Youth (who used their share of the proceeds to build their Murray Street studio) was chosen to headline and the rest of the lineup was filled with bands more known to possibly pack moderate sized clubs instead of the outdoor large venues Lollapalooza was visiting.

Joining SY for the 1995 Lollapalooza included “college” bands such as Pavement, Beck (who premiered songs from Odelay to audiences mainly wanting to hear more songs like “Loser”), The Jesus Lizard, Yo La Tengo, Hole, Superchunk, Tuscadero, Built to Spill, Mike Watt, Helium, The Roots, Dirty Three, Doo Rag, Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, Moby, Blonde Redhead, Moby, Sinead O’Connor (who abruptly left the tour, some say due to impending pregnancy, to be replaced by Elastica) and even an appearance in NY by legend Patti Smith. Lollapalooza 1995 also helped out the “frat rock” crowd by including bands such as Cypress Hill and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones who, even though their music and fans were drastically different, were favorably received by the groups on the main stage.

The tumultuous Courtney Love and her band Hole provided a large chunk of the backstage drama (for many stops Hole was the only band allowed parking at the venues, backstage Love also punched Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hanna in the kisser) but were also responsible for many of the ticket sales. To be fair, the Jesus Lizard caused their own trouble with singer David Yow introducing some crowds to his "kiwi" which eventually lead to a brief arrest.

It was often reported that at least half of the audience at most stops would be gone before headliners Sonic Youth took the stage but that has frequently been disputed. It was clear though that many of the attendees of Lolla ’95 were there more for the atmosphere of the all day festival instead of paying full attention when Pavement was on stage. Many say that this is due to the fact that the most ardent music fans were in the cheap seats (i.e. lawn) while the expensive actual seats were filled with those who had no desire to sit in the intense heat while the bands tried their best to have their music fill the large venues.

While those fortunate enough to attend Lollapalooza 1995 will most certainly look back fondly at the lineup they were able to see in one place on one day, the experiment proved what the naysayers were saying; bigger acts are needed to turn a profit. It also proved that hipsters hate coming out in the heat. The following year Lollapalooza responded by putting Metallica, Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine, Cheap Trick, 311, the Wu Tang Clan, the Ramones and Rancid among the acts on the mainstage. Festivals since have included bands of Lollapalooza ’95 caliber but the idea now is as many as possible with as short sets as possible (ahem Lollapalooza ’08).

While many will argue that Lollapalooza ’95 might not have been an overall success, it’s spirit is alive, mainly with the ATP festivals ongoing, especially the My Bloody Valentine curated ATP NY 2008 festival.
