if she doesn't like it as a ring you can always say,"then how about as a buttplug?"

seriously.

here, let me buy you a tiffany's ring so you'll feel speshul and then we'll end up mortgaging our new house and fighting over financial problems and get divorced. it's idiocy. and entirely uncreative.

no didnt you hear? ringpops are the rage now.

but seriously. if a guy proposed to me with a ringpop, id totally swoon. but i would probably expect some sort of silver band in the future as it wont dissappear if i start licking it.

i was engaged before, no ring, just our word

it didn't work out, but i don't think it had anything to do with a lack of diamond on my finger

so i guess my answer is yes to your initial question

Maybe if you made the ring pop from scratch dragon fruit flavored. Otherwise a decoder ring would be fantastic.

Acceptable substitutes for diamonds: Panjshir emeralds set in platinum. Bixbite would be lovely as well.

Other fun gems with color shifting qualities:
Zincite
Andalusite
Morganite
Sphalerite
Hackmanite
violet Enstatite

Canadian diamonds are slaughter free.
However, sphalerite has such a high index of refraction it produces more intense fire than a diamond.

actually, less than 5% of diamonds are conflict diamonds these days. BUT the majority of diamonds come from horrible labor systems anyway.

HELLLLLLL NO

It has nothing to do with being a gold digger, it's about tradition.

If a dude proposed to me with a ringpop I would seriously ponder his sanity

What i'm going to do is grab all the change in my "coin-star" jar and go to Alberto's to find the perfect ring next to the fake lower back tattoo machines (they actually have one) Then i'm going to keep buying rings until i find the perfect one.

Q: What is the percentage of conflict diamonds in the world’s diamond supply?
A: Although there is no exact figure, the diamond industry claims that it was previously 4% and is now as low as 1% after the Kimberly Process was put in place. Consumer advocates, however believe that conflict diamonds make up as much 10-15% of the world diamond supply.

I don't trust what the diamond industry says just like i don't trust what the oil industry says.

so yeah BLOOD DIAMONDS HAHA

I think if someone ACTUALLY did this the whole cute factor would be kind of lost.

But expensive diamonds are also stupid.

I'd just go with a nice, low priced and conservative band myself.

most of you won't read this but it's interesting

http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/198202/diamond

talks about how the romanticized idea of the diamond was purely an industry thing (gasp!) (tardition!) and how the value of diamonds, in reality, are low

What is "real" value though?

The value of a diamond is what you pay for it.

So are all pretty, shiny things. They have no real intrinsic worth backing their value.

It def doesn't have to be expensive, but it needs to be special. And a ring pop is not (imo) special

once again nintendork wants to start his own debate now. "about" "what" "words" "mean"

anyway, the value of diamonds are, in reality, low

megan, i was kidding. you deserve more than a small plastic ring made in china with a small piece of rock candy on it.

What is there to debate?

There are really only two kinds of value.

A. intrinsic worth

B. actual saleability

Diamonds have none of A and a whole lot of B.

I want to figure out how to get this diamond onto a ring:

the article where I found this Said:
The newly discovered cosmic diamond is a chunk of crystallized carbon 50 light-years from the Earth in the constellation Centaurus. (A light-year is the distance light travels in a year, or about 6 trillion miles.) It is 2,500 miles across and weighs 5 million trillion trillion pounds, which translates to approximately 10 billion trillion trillion carats, or a one followed by 34 zeros.

there is nothing to debate. you were trying to get all "how do i know the color blue to ME is the color blue to YOU" about the idea of value. a diamond's value PLUMMETS like a meteor from the heavens once it is purchased. end of story. no debate.

i told my boy to get me the biggest gaudiest ring he could find in wal-mart because i did not want him to spend a ton of money right now that we could be paying for stuff like...food. that's what 10 and 20 year anniversaries are for....the nice ring. i'm perfectly content with my 14k gold band with a big ol' fake on it. it makes me smile.

Then it has low resale value, which is still not considered actual value. No one wants used diamonds, not very romantic I suppose.

Still though, resale value is odd. It's based on a biased perception. For instance, if you purchase a car it instantly drops in resale as well, BUT... if you can get over the fact that you are buying a used car, that is generally considered the best value on the market... recently purchased but now unwanted cars. Near new, costs a whole lot less, often still under warranty. Take advantage of other people's bias and score a great deal...

Eh, I think about value a lot. Money, now there is something completely worthless.

the fact that any of you are even considering a ring at all means that you are adherant to the notion that a material possession of SOME value, whether it be sentimental, monetary or simply a means to mark one's territory, is necessary.

i say it's rubbish

Seeing as how when the time comes for me to wear a ring, I will be breaking engagement "rules" anyway (wrong hand and all) and also the fact that I don't care, a ringpop is just fine.

i would say it's more about the sentiment than the intrinsic or monetary value of the ring. that being said, i'd much rather receive something i actually wanted or could use, like a spinning wheel i've been wanting, or an isamu noguchi table, or a bianchi milano, et cetera. but i also don't get the point of jewelry or engagements, so the whole idea is sorta lost on me anyways.

my ring is a family heirloom. it was his great-great-grandmother's engagement ring. It means more to me than any cartier ring would be. it carries not only sentiment from my fiance, but also the blessing of his entire family.

added bonus, it is totally amazing and unique.
