Conclusion: There's plenty of women out there, and I suck at it.

My friend tried that experiment once. This guy invited her to "trip the light fantastic" and she canceled her membership.

there are actual attractive girls on those sites?

as a friend said,"if she's good looking, and is single for a long time, there is a reason for it."

Eh I think it's pretty mainstream these days. I actually went to my high school today to visit (I go back once or twice a year) and was talking to a guidance councilor I've known since 5th grade (she was my middle school guidance councilor, and later moved up to the HS). I mentioned how I was single for the first time in a long time now, and didn't know really how to meet people anymore, and even she suggested online dating. As we both said - how DO people meet people anymore. It's one thing when you're in school, but quite another in the professional world. It's tough.

Anyway, I know several people that have met good women that way. For that matter, I dated a couple people from the interwebs for decently long periods back before my ex. I seemed to be decent at it then, not sure what has changed now.

Women definitely get some creepy messages... definitely a turn off, I'm sure. But it isn't like you have to respond when they're stupid.

I'd like to think my messages to people have not been creepy or ridiculous, but the response rate I've gotten has been very low (and nothing has come of any of them).

My girlfriend's mom has been online dating for a little while now. She's having fun, but always has some pretty hilarious stories about freaks who have contacted her.

No worries. I wasn't taking offense or anything, and it allowed me to expand my explanations.

Speaking of the failboat, I read a long story on them saving it today (the Cougar Ace, which is featured in most recent failboat pics). Saving the Cougar Ace

BTW, I should clarify, it isn't like I've been meeting people and just not working out or whatever... I'm saying the response rate has been so low as to be a waste of my time.

That doesn't seem all that long, or at least not long enough to completely give up on it, especially if other ways aren't working.

Well, I haven't really had much of a chance to try other rways, because I've been splitting time between 3 states. Starting today I'm finally settled in 1 place (Boston) That being said, you're probably right.

SELF DEPRECATION AND RELATIONSHIPS BUILT ON PITY DO NOTHING BUT STAVE OFF SOMEONE FROM REALIZING THEY DON'T LIKE WHO YOU ARE. SHAPE UP, STOP CARING ABOUT WOMEN, TRUST ME, IT SUCKS BUT IT'S BENEFICIAL. Bottom line in my experience is that showing interesting in a girl if the first meeting isn't mutual is a total mistake, because you're bound to try really hard, spend a lot of time and money trying to get attached, and have some girl front and fucking suck up the affection then leave for some guy she actually likes. Befriend, don't constantly look for romantic interests... Same goes for girls, equally shitty on both sides of the gender divide.

Plenty of them don't (see: OkCupid, BookOfMatches, PlentyOfFish, to name a few). But the ones that don't are just silly, because people don't take them seriously when they don't have anything invested.

Most of the sites only make you pay when you want to initiate contact. Which generally means the men pay, and the women lure the men in.
Not the womens fault, but it is sort of like a penis tax, if you ask me.

Yeah I've noticed a mix. Some make the initiate pay, some make both pay (ultra lame).

I've met a few really cool people through plentyoffish. Including my present girlfriend. Just posted all the interests off of my facebook, and got replies almost right away. No wackos yet. Or, at least, just wacko enough, but not too wacko.
