Quentin Tarantino and all of his movies can suck it.
I watched Deathproof last night.
UGH. SERIOUSLY.
GAH you too i had to since my friend hadn't seen it and still wanted to even though i told him how horrible it was
it was an alright trade-off he got to watch it and after he declared that it was horrible i punched him in the face
but i also enjoy all the archetypes (kung fu movies, samurai movies, yakuza movies, westerns, the old kung fu tv show) he nodded to by making the movie
Well, what's good about this movie is that it's either a gateway for people who aren't experienced in these genres to have a gateway into them by watching this, thinking it's cool, and it gets them to watch the originals once they find out what it's referencing, or for people who know them, it's a fun movie just to watch and laugh at the references you spot.
That movie was INTENSE. It was near uncomfortable to watch. Absolute tongue-in-cheek, brutal genius. You do have to enjoy horror movies and not have a problem with gore to really enjoy it, though. It was actually better the second time through, becauseI wasn't gripping my seat or gritting my teeth as much. But then, I have a problem with inevitable mortality or extended, slow threat of grievous physical danger.
The scene in The Talented Mr. Ripley where what's-his-face nearly takes that guy's head off in the boat, with an oar, is just horrific in that that character is going to die. He knows it, you can see it in his eyes, and there's absolutely nothing you can do.
I got the same feeling watching Zöe on the hood of that car, trying to hang on when there's nothing to hang on to. Another caveat: I think you have to be OK with anecdotal short-storytelling to really get into Deathproof. You have to let everything slide, stop questioning what a diner conversation between a bunch of random girls has to do with anything, and breethe in the details, whether or not connected to anything.
Also, like it or not, Kurt Russell is an excellent b-movie actor. The guy just blows me away with what he can do with an iffy script and a next to zero character role. I watched Breakdown on Spike last night. Piece of shit movie, but very interesting, and Russel was one of the things that make it worth watching.
