i'm not necessarily interested in any academic discourses/perspectives on the matter, since my views would likely fall within similar veins..

i want to hear/understand the reasoning & logic of persons who do so routinely, &/or whether or not they do it voluntarily or otherwise..

I CAN'T EXPLAIN IT.

& i say it all the time.
& i don't know how to stop.

HELP! srsly. :(

i feel like such a fucking tool every time i inappropriately use the word "like" and i have tried to stop, but it's rather difficult. especially considering i've probably made a habit of it for close to 10 years now...shit. i am lame.

"pretty much" is something else i say far too often.
& "obviously"
& "essentially"
& "um no"
& "fucking" as an adjective
i should just have my brain completely erased & start over so my vocab doesn't sound like a 13 year old valley girl who's being rebellious in the 80s.

Okay, since i have nothing better to do, and it would seem that there is a lack of understanding, I am going to throw this out there:

People use like to compare things "x" is like "y" but that is not really the way you are talking about i am guessing.

So what about this.

It is very common for people to say something similar to: "He said 'shut the fuck up asshole!'. " We call this reported speech, and when people do this, it is usually very effective in representing other people and other points of view. So when you quote someone, you are not only repeating what they said but representing them as a certain type of person (in this case, a rude person). Verbs like say, told, yelled, asserted, and pronounced all act as markers that we can use mark of a certain "voice" in the flow of a conversation of a narrative. But what you cannot represent grammatically (as those verbs do) is people's emotions or intentions. It would appear that the way that 'like' is used in conversations and in IMs fills that gap. For one thing, it makes it so you do not have perfectly represent what people say. Saying "he sad 'X' " is open to criticism ("No I didn't!"). But saying "he was like "x" ' is really not. Because in some sense, you are not talking about what people say, but about their sort of attitude, intentions, general character. A lot of people seem to think that "like" is a filler, but most of the time when it is used it is used with grammatical continuity: there is a pattern. And its cool, because it is a linguistic innovation, of the kind that leads to language change, of the kind that has led languages to evolve. It basically collapses the distinctions between speech and thought.

yes, all of these are basically used to either say "my turn of speaking is not over yet" or "please respond to what i just said"

why does it matter, argue something important , say for instance " what is my purpose for being on the planet?"

I did not give you that of course, but I really think there is something to this particular perspective. Much of the time, what we say is outside our linguistic awareness, and I think "like" is one such case.

it basically cushions your speech. for example, "i'm like really upset" is less matter-of-fact than "i'm really upset". i guess if you are more confident in what you are saying, you aren't as tempted to say like.

Asking to explain the frequent use of the word "like" is like asking to explain like Charlie The Unicorn & Candy Mountain

YEAH, THE WAY THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT "LIKE" HERE IS A DIFFERENT USE THEN THE ONE THAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT, WHICH RELATES TO REPRESENTING OTHERS' SPEECH. STILL, IT SEEMS TO HAVE SOME GRAMMATICAL RULES TO IT, AND IS USED DIFFERENTLY THEN "UM" ETC.

I am not trying to be pompous, this is just the kinda stuff I study so its cool to talk to other about it. Is that permissible?

the word "like" commonly comes into play during conversations for lack of the ability to form coherent and succinct sentences
