Me: I'm headed to Northern Maine - to live with the Abanaki Indians. It will be rough, but I figure I can survive off of shell-fish and smoked meat for a few years.

I don't want to be near any urban centers for sure. It'll be like a zombie movie....

i am quitting my job for no reason, selling my house, moving to southern california, and trying to get my selfish ex-husband to fall in love with me again.

YEAH AND IT'S NOT EVEN OPPOSITE DAY ZOMG

Plant more vegetables in the garden. I can legally host livestock where I live, so I'll get me some chickens too. Dig a well for water. Get used to riding a bike everywhere.

I do wish I were just joking about this.

On the plus side, I'm near urban centers so I could get free zombie entertainment every weekend.

You wont have a job to quit. No one will buy your house because no one will have money, furthermore, there will be no financing. "Moving" won't even be possible in the traditional sense. Its not like you'll be able to rent a Uhaul or anything. (See above).

You need a better plan.

Piper:

First off, you owe me a response re: socks.

Second, I like the vegetables and livestock idea, but I suspect that you'l have to give it up shortly in favor of a nomadic lifestyle - the hoardes of mall-rat consumers and banker types (who know nothing about practical subsistence existence) will rob you blind. (Much like they do already).

Also, I would advise you get as far from an urban center as possible. Atlantic Canada and the Maritimes might be a good choice. Perhaps a tropical island?

the smartest thing for me to do is to take out student loans..go to school, get my degree. by which i am doing. By the time i am done the economy will pick back up and i will find a job in a heart beat. I will also be able to use student loans for my bills if necessary. My job seems pretty secure for now. We'll see.

Against the consumers and bankers, I have natural defenses on my side. They have to climb many hills to get here and it's hidden away. Not many people know how to get here by car, and such commodities will be scarce then. Also, I live in a hippie community, which will likely band together in a brotherly fashion to protect each other.

And I love it here, to a fault. By the time I admit that maybe I should move on, I'll no longer have a method of getting to Canada, much less an island. Besides doing some sort of prostitute hitchhiking. But I'll be all crazy and dirty by then, I wouldn't be able to get a very good trade.

el_Uste: Good plan! I'll add that to mine. I have some shotguns. Handguns are useful though.

cicada: You should stay put. Its sounds like you're in a good situation. Stock up on coffee though. There won't be any global trade for several years.

cabbler: You look fat. You will probably need a LOT of land. Perhaps some place in the Midwest?

HectorX: You must be a banker or a mall-rat.

DLH: Think credit cards. You need quick access to capital. Buy yourself all the survival supplies you need. No time for traditional occidental education. Think survival school. [Add this to my list as well].

Piper: You should like you are set. Q: Do you take credit cards?

Actually you are wrong. The credit cards interest rate will sky rocket with the economy.
I plan to also pay off my credit card debt with my school loan. The loan i am getting for the year is enough to pay that off, pay for classes and other additives. The Government is paying my interest rate while i attend school.

Do your research :)

Also, be prepared for another stimulus check knocking at your door step. With our retarded government, they will continue to send those until they realize it is not enough.

Fred: Good!

DLH: The global economy is going to collapse. You aren't going to have to pay back any loans. There will be no more government. Guns, matches, aluminum foil and hatchets will do you more good than that major in sociology or certificate course in graphic design.

The only payment methods I accept are transportation, cold hard cash, or sacks of potatoes.

I agree with dontlosehope, relying on credit will only cause trouble as rates go up and up and banks foreclose.

Yes, and as for student loans, i do not have to pay them back until 6 months AFTER i get my degree of choice :) Given i am only a part time student, i have extra cash to pay those credit cards off and possibly pay my cars principal balance.

So the title of the thread, when not truncated should read: "Post your plans for surviving the meltdown of the global economy due to the collapse of the US mortgage market"

Almost forgot the subtitle: Don't reply if you are douche-bag with a lame haircut, as you and your kind will be the first to be hung by your entrails once the collapse of our current economic system comes about.

aren't you kind of screwed if you haven't already started putting your arsenal together? just a thought, but maybe you should get some of the guns now and have them ready for when the zombies do attack. practice shooting them. know what you are doing. know how to clean them and adjust for distances....

the plan

foresee coming crisis through the use of advanced "Future-Telling Devices of Spherical Shape"

then utilize weapons of minimal destruction to procure supplies from other people with supplies

load up said supplies into my transport unit

scavenge items off the street to sell on the black market, like small babies and pop cans

then flee to a foreign country to relax in the splendor of their "Adult Entertainment Industries"

and of course, prevent the evil forces from reading my thoughts by using Brain-Wave Deflection Anti-Detection Helmet

i think that about covers it.

wait....

is it a bad thing that i have a plan for this that i've discussed with everybody involved?

um.

rebuild the secret (well, until now) cabin back in the hidden gully of the ranch.
and
pretty much continue life,
just with more veggie-ing and a non-electrical source of water pumpage.

and steal all the foxfire books from the local library.
