I remember reading some quotation likening this to staging a KKK rally and calling it satire

worst analogy ever

at least the editor of the new yorker stood up for his magazine and didn't utter hasty apologies and recall the issue or something equally spineless

I can't really tell if the point of this thread is to call insulted-feeling people dumb, or to call the New Yorker dumb... so I just thought I'd put it on record that people should stop feeling insulted at every fucking second. New Yorker ftw

Of course, that cartoon being offensive WAS THE ENTIRE POINT OF PUTTING IT ON THE COVER

the point was not to be offensive, because they weren't affirming what is in the images, the point was to show what the republican party is making the obama's out to be. when you post "satire" it is painfully witless. Your community college is failing you.

One more post directed at me and i'm getting my photoshop out you greasy, bloated, chipmunk. (that wasn't satire, that was intended to be offensive. See? There is a difference)

Having to point out your work is a satire means it's not a very good satire. Like when people add "I'm joking" to the end of what they're saying. Probably means they're fucking awful at telling a joke.

Also, this is a fucking terrible way to illustrate a satire, i could of done a better job with stick figures. And yes, I get it. I see the "bones" being given with the fists.
The new yorker should be eating shit for publishing such a half-assed attempt.
I've seen clearer images of christ on toast.

i understand what the new yorker was trying to do, but i can also understand why obama is pissed off about it.

also: while the imagery may be offensive, they weren't relying on it as it was just a visualization of the attempts of the right wing at debasing Obama. That is wherein the "punchline" lies. There intent was to poke fun at the republicans not SHOCK VALUE.

and yes, when i get around to it some enderwiggin photoshops are coming.

god you are stupid. WE ACKNOWLEDGE they were offensive, but that was not the heart of the "joke". It was to show how silly their views are not how shocking their campaign tactics are, because frankly, smear tactics are nothing new. You should just shut up while the lol factor of the photoshops i am going to make still outweigh the snarky/hurtful factor. right now you are at a 3/1 ratio and falling.

My point is this:

The New Yorker knew exactly what they were doing when they published that image on their front page. They knew the image was going to be offensive to a wide segment of the public.

They've gotten a tons of press out of this, and a lot of attention to the issue, simply by putting something "controversial" like that on the cover.

It's naive to think that "that wasn't the point' of using that particular cartoon to lampoon the mudslinging directed at Obama. It was absolutely part of the reason they used that particular image. You don't stay in publishing for that long if you can't gauge the public's reaction to things you say in your publication, by images or in words.

Part of the satire is the portrayal of an image that shows how ridiculous and offensive these ideas about Obama are, when in many parts of the country and in many circles, they're being presented as fact.

It would be poking fun at the Republican party if the Republican party were the only group making these kinds of claims.

So if you want to continue thinking that the sole purpose of that cover was to poke fun at the republican party for things they were saying about Obama, you go right ahead and think that.

But you're missing the much broader picture.

you clearly don't read the new yorker. their covers are all based on social commentary, not the intent of being offensive. they dont strive on shock value in the way you are suggesting. there is no talking to you, as you are a know it all.

im telling you you are not going to like the photoshops i will make. after they are made i will only respond to you with them
