Hey Guys,

I am going to be in your city from October 3rd to 8th/9th after spending 3 night in Montreal. I have been scouring the internetz for places that seem ok with not much success. Any recommendations? I prefer B&B's to hotels.

There used to be a bunch of old hotels up on the upper West side near Central Park that were all shared bathroom places.. they were like $80 a night, but I don't know if any of them are still there

Honestly, I've stayed at plenty of hotels in NYC and unless you are spending mad loot, you are probably better off saving it and staying at the hostels. You will probably have more space anyway

Hotwire.com will probably be your best bet, but I doubt you will find many good deals this far out

Fiance is not down with hostels. It took forever to convince him that shared bathrooms were ok. That's what I get for falling for a germiphobe with slight OCD.

Google Hotel 17, and then call them and make a reservation. It's in like the nebulous Chelsea/Grammercy area and you can get a single with a shared bathroom for about $80. It's really nice and clean. and that particular area is quieter than you would think. Not really what you might want, I know, and it is a little walk from the train. But whatever, it is cheap and cool. Oh, and Madonna's SEX book was photographed there, partially. Or you can stay with me and sleep in...uh...the corner with the dog? I have no idea, maybe in the bathroom.

Oh the Hotel 17 people also own another property called Hotel 30 on YOU GUESSED IT 30th street, that is a little more expensive. I have never stayed there, but my boyfriend stayed there for work and he said a double is $130.

I'd stay in Chelsea before I stayed in Harlem-- not sure what your plans are but 125th street is kind of way the fuck out of the way

The place in Chelsea doesn't look too bad and Chelsea is pretty centrally located

Yeah, Harlem is going to put you seeing the inside of a train for your entire trip. That is if you want to see midtown like most people. Harlem/Fordham/Bronx have lots to offer, and you can take a single trip into Grand Central on the Metro North train just one time instead of going back and forth on subways constantly so hit all the major tourist highlights.

But I live in Fordham and really like it.

Chelsea is nice, I promise, for a more central Manhattan experience. It is relatively quiet and there are some cool bars and you can get around on the subways or even drunkenly walk the mile or so to TImes Square and all that ridiculousness. It is, however, quite a distance from the museums and some of the better shopping on the Upper East Side. For both of those things, you may find yourself doing some more-complicated subway routes or staggering across Central Park tangled in dog leashes. Just some neighborhood pointers, since you know...like...everything looks so small on a map until you land in it. I made mistakes when I first got here too. Like drunkenly walking across the frozen reservoir in Central Park in two feet of snow.

Speaking as someone from the west, taxis WILL hit you and one mile IS too far to walk.

Best idea - Rent a car, drive to New York from Montreal. Sleep in it. No roaches.

lol, Michael. I also wanted to point out that although my apartment building was gutted and renovated OHHHH six months ago and the entire thing is pristine and surgically clean, there are ants in the kitchen and I saw a roach in the bathroom yesterday. But it was the only roach. Like, a loner. I think NY is just full of bugs. One day I saw a huge rat running down some rafters above people's heads at the Canal Street subway station. They were laughing at it, and it was the size of a house cat. Not that rats are bugs.

Jesus this is off topic. I am going to buy groceries now, since there is not much traffic at this time of day on a Sunday. Actually, that is why I am awake.

haha i'll gladly take ants over roaches any day! the last two places i lived in the bronx luckily had no bugs at all. but growing up, the places i lived in had a good amount of roaches. it's one of the few bugs that i CAN NOT STAND to even look at. pregnant roaches are the worst. and when you kill them they eject the egg out of their rear so that the new flesh may live on. ok i'm gonna go vomit now.

rats: the last place i lived in the BX had a large park area right next to us. filled with rats and black squirrels. you'd be walking past and some squirrel would jump out at you all "FEED ME MOTHERFUCKER!" and it would scare the shit out you because you'd think it was a rat.
