Where do you stay?

I have a couple friends from Seattle (and "from the internet") that are visiting NYC later this month. They are planning to rent to out an apartment in Brooklyn for their 2-week stay, but screwed up on the scheduling and don't actually have the place for the first 3 days. I know MOCers are always finding cheap hotels and hostels. Any recommendations?

Try St. Marks Hotel... it's pretty damn cheap, but it's not exactly ideal living conditions if you don't like the idea that most of the rooms are rented out by the hour (for the obvious reasons)... but as far as cheap goes in NYC... that's pretty cheap.

Or if they don't mind, they can go live somewhere around Queens... there are a few motels and stuff, and it's closer to the airport than the city, and it's not far from the city either.

I stayed at The Time near Times Square (http://www.thetimeny.com/). Really good price for the quality of the room but everywhere good to go is a decent trek. While there I spotted out three places I'd consider next time are: http://www.offsoho.com/ , http://www.ichotelsgroup.com (in Brooklyn, there are two, one regular Holiday Inn and one Express and both within a couple blocks of each other and near the Union St Metro stop). All of those places are decent prices but I've spent a ton of money finishing my basement over the last couple months don't know if any trip is within my budget next week even though I got a week off.

***I went to the Holiday Inn page and now that I look again, I think they're both Express even though the one on Butler (used to be a Comfort Inn) is cheaper.

I stayed at a holiday inn express for the majority of my stay last week and it was pretty okay. it was the midtown/MSG one - the rooms were appropriately small and overpriced. they had a decent continental breakfast but they served these strange neon yellow omelets with spray cheese in them. also, my card kept demagnetizing. 2.9/5 for the holiday inn express experience.

Through an error at Off Soho Suites I just booked the 4 person deluxe suite for $149/night. The employee was quick to tell me he was fixing that rate as soon as possible though as it should be the sale rate on the 2 person room. I guess that means I'll be in town from Nov 11-14 with a couple others.

Agreed. I don't miss dialing up with a 2400 baud modem though.

No shit. I crapped myself when I installed a 14.4k modem and could download a megabyte mp2 file in 10 minutes.

I remember leaving the connection up all night just to download a dozen naked pictures of Jenny McCarthy.
