Lagwagon was fucking awesome. That's why it's my best show. Rad line-up of some of my all-time favorites, and being able to see Lagwagon before I and/or they die.
Fantomas at Knitting Factory, NYC 2001 was probably the best show. Fantomas/Melvins Big Band was rad too.
Sleater-Kinney & Dillinger Escape Plan shows have been awesome as well.
Oh, can't forget Weird Al in 2000. For serious. Such a great show.
man fuck those pits. there was one at the mars volta show in dallas and it was awful. why would you pay to go to a great show with no intention to watch, listen, or dance but to beat the crap out of people and look like an asshole? and that one was ESPECIALLY BAD because 1 of 3 people had their little cedric/omar fro's. jeeeez
Lagwagon, The Lawrence Arms, and A Wilhelm Scream - Summer '06
I still submit that the greatest show of my life would have been Blink 182, Bad Religion, and Fenix TX on my 13th birthday in 1999, but my mom wouldn't let me go.
The resolve tour was so good. I came to the Detroit stop. Lagwagon is ALWAYS good live. They're funny, they play long sets, and they play a wide variety of their existence as a band.
Also, NOFX is always fun to see live. The 2006 tour, the "Decline" tour when they played the whole Decline live every show. I went to both shows at the House of Blues in Chicago, it was so much fun. They opened with the Decline.
2007
The Faint - Webster Hall (always good live)
Rage Against The Machine/ Wu-Tang Clan (Rock rhe Bells music festival)
The Klaxons - Webster Hall
2008
Radiohaed/ Kings of Leon/ Animal Collective/ Metric/ Girl Talk/ Underworld (All Points West music festival, went both days they played)
2009
Japanther/ Ninjasonik (Somewhere in Brooklyn)
The Juan Maclean/ Black Star Meteoric (LPR)
Animal Collective (Terminal 5)
Simian mobile disco (thepoolparties.com for free)
My answer is always Springsteen, every time I've seen him. No one can put on a show like him, he has so much honesty and energy in every song he plays. Carbon/Silicon December 6, 07 @ the Highline Ballroom is a close second.
And while Conor Oberst is one of my favorite musicians, I really think he sucks live.
oh wait i saw.. A MILLION DEAD COMPS (yes COMPS not COPS)
ex members of:
SAM HAIN, TIGER ARMY, SON OF SAM, DAG NASTY, REPTILE HOUSE, CHAIN OF STRENGTH, INSIDE OUT, DRIVE LIKE JEHU, WOOL, STATUE, MAD PARADE. yes and i saw them play.
ive seen a stupid number of shows. kind of hard to pin down a best.
turbonegro in 2003 was pretty great
both times i have seen morrissey were excellent.
both times i saw springsteen were great.
at the drive-in had greaser hair back in like 1997. fun show. i wish i could have stayed for the whole thing.
the dirtbombs put on a super fun show.
the black lips were tops.
the pogues were a very good time.
and the stooges were amazing. even if they are older than dirt.
oh, and the dwarves in like 1998. they played maybe five songs before a cop choked the bass player and a bunch of kids grabbed the bands gear and got it into their van so they could get out of there.
forgot about the descendents in 1997. one of the first non-local shows i drove to. for an encore milo grabbed the bass, the bass player grabbed the mic, the drummer played guitar and the guitar player played drums. then they ran through a 6-7 song set of black flag covers. good times.
dillinger four two nights in a row in march. everyone was singing along in the venue and i got to talk with paddy about bass amps and which era of Integrity was the best.
seeing majority rule play on a sidewalk in front of an art museum was pretty badass too. other stand-outs from that fest were kodan armada and kylesa (this was in like 2003 when kylesa was still good)
the first time i saw leatherface, hot water music, and dillinger four, kid dynamite was supposed to play. the singer was sick though. i never got a chance to see them after that. i drove from indiana to cleveland specifically to see kid dynamite too. still a fun show, but yeah. lame.

those are 4 of my favorite bands.
they are way up there for me too. 6-8 years ago, its about all i listened to.
