that 'scene' was mainly formed in opposition to the angry nature of late-70s punk music.
the followers of the original goth scene manifested an air of melancholy as a sort of counter to the fervent frustration and fury of the punks.
there's your difference, in a vague explanation of two very different music scenes.
however, nowadays, 'emo' and 'goth' have been killed by the kids, unfortunately.
