Tarentel
Stars of the Lid
God is an Astronaut
The Six Parts Seven
MONO
Brian Eno's ambient albums
By The End of Tonight
Do Make Say Think
Pelican
Russian Circles

To me, post-rock is the perfect soundtrack for existentialism.

Everything posted already is great although for some reason I'm not a huge Explosions in the Sky fan (Mono have been my preferred act for awhile in that part of the spectrum)

Anyway, things I highly recommend-

Crippled Black Phoenix (Members of Mogwai and Electric Wizard mashed together, occasionally with Josh Homme)
Yndi Halda
Efterklang
Red Sparrowes (Same members as Isis)
Antennas To Heaven
Bark Psychosis
If These Trees Could Talk
Burn Rome In a Dream
Great Destroyer
World's End Girlfriend

I'll have to look through what I have and see what I've forgotten, I got through phases where I listen to absurd amounts of post-rock.

Forgot some:
FCS North
Isotope 217
EF
Unwed Saior

And two bands I can't believe I forgot:
Tortoise

and

Talk Talk, who are (arguably) kinda sorta the ground-zero for post-rock (or what would become it). It's strange to think that, without the ladder half of Talk Talk's recorded output, if even half the bands listed in this threat would even exist/sound the way they do.

Seriously, if you've never heard it., give Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden a listen. It's beautiful and amazing and truly breathtaking in certain parts.

Every "post-rock" (whatever the fuck that means) album I listen to reminds me of Slint's Spiderland, in a bad ripped off kinda way. Slint is also one of the first bands, if not the first, to put out a true "post-rock" album.

Seriously everyone needs to check out Spiderland. It's so fucking good.

This thread.

This Will Destroy You is one of my favorite bands, ever ever.
Caspian
Signal Hill
Saxon Shore
The Six Parts Seven
The Album Leaf

And most recently.

Not one of their instrumental tracks, but probably the one that made me fall in love with Crippled Black Phoenix. Not sure what's up with the three-second clip at the beginning of this, but whatever, the song rules hard

Does anyone else find Tortoise to be somewhat kind of not very nice?

I love Mogwai, Mono, Explosions in the Sky, and Godspeed You Black Emperor!, but what Tortoise does, I cannot understand. Lots of tinny bells. They lack a melody like Mogwai often employ, or a nice drone like Mono use, and they aren't really didactic or avant garde like Godspeed. Just noise.

caspians "the four trees" and foxholes "push/pull" have been doing it for me. i've been listening to mogwais "government commissions" as well.. which is fucking flawless work. sparrows swarm and sing "o'shenandoah mighty death will find me" is such a great album, it really fills in the emptiness that godspeed left.
also... i love envy's old work, but goddamn "abyssal" and "insomniac doze" have been slaying me.
i feel like i am the only one who thinks that if these trees could talk is fucking garbage.

although I don't recommend stereolab mixed with marijuana, it's really more of a buzzed or sober minded piece for maximum enjoyment factor

I just saw Tortoise last month and it was so nuts.

Have any of you listened to Charles Spearin's (of Do Make Say Think) The Happiness Project?

I second Talk Talk

Talk Talk's "Laughing Stock" is not only one of my favorite Post-rock albums, it's one of my favorite albums period.

I routinely listen to my copy of the Black Tar Prophecies Vol. I split with Grails and Red Sparowes.

As much as I love "post-rock", I'm starting to find it very samey and as a genre I think its hit a creative slump, where most bands are just bad clones of early Mogwai and The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place era Explosions in the Sky. And some of it is catchy riffs sure, but it feels clinical and forced, there's no real emotion in it: God Is An Astronaut and This Will Destroy You for example.

Still I love listening to Godspeed, Red Sparowes, Set Fire To Flames, Tortoise, ASMZ, Valley of the Giants, the more experimental side of things even into ISIS, Pelican, Earth and SunnO))), although they're more metal/drone than post rock. But meh, genres are pretty shit anyway.
