Emo as it was no longer exists. It's all either post emo or scene.

If "emo kids" listened to the original emo, they would be surprised to find that it was originally a derivative of hard core punk.

But kids are going to believe whatever they want to if it will make them feel like a part of something.

Emo actually did exist at one point. But it was a shitty name for a good branch of hardcore. Most bands put in the spectrum of emo really were trying to break away from the label. Then when bands like Sunny Day Real Estate came around, and people thought that an indie rock band with emotive lyrics must be emo. Then, everything with emotional lyrics and obscure recognition became emo. Then the second wave of "emo" came out with The Get Up Kids, which was really pop punk, anyway, and then one of the worst things to ever happen to music came around:

And now every shitty band that mentions a girl and wears makeup is now considered emo.
