It's a movement that lots of people talk of. I wonder , what if the bigger part of the world agreed with the idea of abolishing concepts of a 'man' and a 'women' when it comes to non - biological subjects? When it'd come to relationships - do you think it would make some of the roles switch, but people would be still attracted to those who had opposite characteristics, for example 'feminine' man would be attracted to 'masculine' woman or something like that and do you think it would let people be more of themselves? Since I don't understand this subject well and since I know how this topic can provoke some of you, I'm sorry if it insults someone, I don't mean it,

If we abandon the concepts of man and women, then that means I'll have to do my own dishes and make my own sandwiches, and I can't have that.

fuck feminism. equal rights, yes. equal physically/instinctually? not a chance.
genders are biologically different and thus have different biological purposes/reasons for doing certain things.
this isn't to say that women should be treated as lesser than men, or not given as many opportunities, etc. it just drives me nuts when people say that men and women are exactly the same, because they're not. you can't remove gender or gender roles and expect to be satisfied mentally. it's not scientifically viable.

feminism = equal rights, isn't it? ;] yeah, physically or instinctually men and women can't be equal, for sure. But what about psychological aspect? Out of curiosity I'm asking, what if stereotypes were removed from our heads? What if we didn't indicate ourselves as 'man' or 'woman' when it'd come to our behaviour. I was also intrigued when I got this comparison with slavery. Lots of slaves didn't want to become free, they didn't think life could be different for them. What if we, men and women, don't want gender roles removal just because we don't imagine life this way, since gender roles exist longer than slavery, it existed from the very start? I personally like gender roles the way they are today, I'm just wondering.

I always thought gender roles were a psychological instinct (not rooted stereotypes) and that's why they haven't really changed since the dawn of time. I always figured that to be the case, instead of fear of change...which could be possible, I suppose.

As I told before, I don't really know this subjet well. So I don't know if gender roles is instinct. And well, I guess they have changed a bit I guess, let's take metrosexualism for example. On the other hand, you could say men wore make - up at all times by taking examples of different tribes that painted signs on their bodies or French court fashion in XVIII century. I'm telling you, it's not that simple ;D

If I'm not presented with a fabulous sandwich by a dozen bare-chested women in 10 minutes, y'all don't get to vote any more.

I was a Women's Studies/Lit major in college and have way too much information on this subject to put into a post, so I'm going to keep it very to the point.

I believe that gender and sexuality are social constructs. There is a tendency of humans to have to put things into categories, and gender is one of the strangest of those. It's stupid to believe that there is a definitive difference between a man and a woman.

Before you say "A vagina," I should mention that I know a person who has a full female reproductive system and is XY chromosomally. What gender role do you suggest here?

Do you really give Archee a male gender role over somebody like girl01?

There's a lot more to this than you think.

What I gleaned from this is that the OP is asking what do you think would happen if gender-roles were completely obliterated.
As in, no more man/woman, a lot more "human being".
She also asked if we thought that society would just shun this change and continue to live in a gender-specific community.

This thread is meant to confuse ;D and to make think about this ;D I like gender specific roles myself, but do I ever think that it's probably only because I'm used to it? :] Damn, it's interesting.

smilie-face overkill.
No one can really discuss the topic if they don't understand it.

I think for someone trying to gain information or opinions on the topic, it would be best to outline it clearly rather than throwing out a mosh of confusing words.

But whatever.

I think it's lost most of its meaning now. Watch an episode of "Mad Men," I understand that's what gender relations were once like. It's hard to address gender biases and such when they aren't really as implicit now. We have more of a situation where there are institutional biases against women (pay, job roles, etc.) and overt sexism (genuine belief that women are less capable).

to be honest many gender-based "stereotypes" are actually biologically based, and have a primitive reason for being true. They shouldn't be used to mentally or psychologically stifle women or men, but they are impossible to eradicate completely.

amy is right... there is no real definitive topic here.

but this;

makes the most sense to me.
