Swing Kids, Cold Cave, Wattie Wednesday, November 26th , 2:05 PM By: gibby
oh hey.

Well in the last week a ton of shit happened... the west coast Unbroken / Undertow / Swing Kids / Jenny Piccolo show is no longer rumor and is actually at the Glass House in Pomona this May

Saturday May 9th 2009 at:
The Glass House
200 W. Second St.
Pomona CA, 91766

That shit is going to be absurd... people flying in from all over, if you're in the area, don't miss it. It's 1995, and ur moshing.

What else happened? Wattie from the Exploited got beat up in Madrid by a crew of anti-fascist youth with iron bars at a show put on by an anti-fascist youth group... *scratches head*... When asked to explain themselves, they claimed they saw the infamous and very old Exploited/UKSubs/Charlie Harper photo where they are saluting (as a joke.) Punks not dead. Source.

Hmm... what else? My record label Dais Records put out some more stuff... if you're into minimal synth/coldwave, check out COLD CAVE, and if you're a fan of TG, Genesis, or Psychic TV - you'll love the new Psychic TV/PTV3 album... hit up our website for more info.

In other MOC news, we have a sweet bugfix build going live this coming Monday, December 1st that will address recent issues with the forums as well as uploaded images. hurrah. Be well, eat a lot this week. xo

Fall Out Boy's Chocolate Factory Tuesday, November 11th , 10:52 AM By: gibby
To celebrate the release of the new record, "Folie à Deux", Fall Out Boy is offering 5 "Golden Tickets" randomly placed in pre-order packages for "Folie à Deux". They haven't yet revealed what the tickets are for or what they get you, but if it involves Gene Wilder in any way, count me the fuck in.

Unbroken Reunion Friday, October 31st , 11:03 AM By: gibby
Oh fuck. It's actually happening? I got dates on the Chicago gig at the Metro in May as part of the Burning Fight book release show, (Burning Fight is an upcoming book covering the 90's hardcore scene.) and there is supposed to be a SoCal date - hunting that down at the moment, if anyone has any info hit me up.

In addition to Unbroken, many of you from the old guard will recognize Split Lip, Trial, Underdog, 108, and many others on this bill. Hopefully this gets pulled off without a hitch.

May 2nd-3rd : $55.00
Metro
3730 N Clark St
Chicago, IL 60613
www.indietickets.com/events/bu rningfight/

For you younger folks who might not know Unbroken (for shame!), they were a San Diego based Straight Edge hardcore band active in the early 90s, (members of Julia, Swing Kids, etc) and very much at the forefront of blurring the lines between traditional hardcore and a more driving, dark, and emotional sound. They would become an inspiration and undeniable reference point to many of the bands to follow, especially in the early 00's.

Check out a clip here, and get ready.

MTV Music Thursday, October 30th , 12:36 PM By: gibby
Somewhere along the line MTV stopped being about music and started being about teenage dating shows, drunken brawls in the "Real World" house, blurred sex on hidden cameras, and "confessionals"... Well if Reality Shows killed the video star, the internet saved it.

Today MTV launched MTV Music, where you can basically watch any fucking video you want in much better quality than YouTube (and, for the moment, without all the stupid comments).

Get into it.

appull Said: Uhh... I don't think Gibby actually watched any of the videos. The video quality is shit. I guess MTV's mass amounts of money can't buy enough server space to house videos that haven't been compressed down to Wolfenstein video quality. Oh, well.

Calvin Johnson and Ian Svenonius Friday, October 24th , 11:05 AM By: gibby
Indierock and punk legend (and makeoutclub member) Calvin Johnson was recently interviewed by, well, indierock and punk legend Ian Svenonius on Ian's own Vice (VBS.tv) show Soft Focus.

If you aren't familiar (tsk tsk) - Calvin sang for Beat Happening, an American indie band that formed in 1982 and basically paved the way for all american twee/indie/punk bands to come. In my opinion they are America's first...

He also started a little label called K Records to put out their material and stuff from his friends... to quote Rory over at Vice: "K was extremely DIY, even by the standards of the time. Half the artwork for the early releases and promo material looked like it was done in crayon. This, coupled with Beat Happening's gradeschool sound and Calvin's used sweaters, often leads to K being pigeonholed as a strictly twee-pop label, sort of the US equivalent of Sarah or Postcard Records. We're not trying to be all nohomo about twee or anything, it just bears mention that this is the same label that put out Bikini Kill and Nation of Ulysses, who are slightly heavier than say, the Softies."

Ian Svenonius of course was in DC legends Nation of Ulysses and and sang for the mid-90's mod legends (spock haircuts and white belts, anyone?) The Make-Up.

The interview is fantastic for a number of reasons, but mainly because the two of them are close friends and kindred spirits - which shows as they speak on everything from the old days of K and the 7" 45rpm punk uprise, to the history of and (current state of) the music/record industry, to Charlies Brown.

Basically this is two dudes that know their shit having a great conversation that's worth your time.

Janes Addiction Play Tiny Ass LA Mexican Bar Thursday, October 23rd , 12:50 PM By: gibby
Tonight the original lineup of Janes Addiction is playing the tiny ass downtown mexican bar "La Cita", known mostly for it's post-raver neon hoody wearing banger electro coke-sniffing hipster parties. Sweet.

Good luck getting anywhere near the venue, as it is likely to be a Hollywood douche scene for at least a 3 block radius. But if you do, take pictures and tell me about it.

Philadelphia. Tuesday, October 21st , 12:57 PM By: gibby
Philly is one of my favorite places on earth. From the legendary shit that goes on, to the incredible dudes I'm so lucky to know there, to the parties, shows, music, sketchy after hours, and killer food (Moms, Pizza Wolves, etc) - It's a place I hold close to my heart that is always fun to be.

The last time I was there on Halloween was at the Killtime in 2001. There was some street beef, a car chase that ended with a car flipping over outside the venue and almost exploding, Damage did an Ink & Dagger cover set, and a dude was dressed up as the Revelation Records Messageboard (seriously.)

Halloween in 2008 will rule for different reasons, as the doors to Juanita and Juan's will be opening with a reading by Eric Paul.

This is an indie book / art / performance space... and sounds like it's going to be an awesome spot to hang out and support. More spaces like this please!

"Juanita and Juan's is a small curated book boutique, gallery and performance space to host our loves and inspirations, kindred spirits and immortal enemies.

We are located on the corner of 11th and Cherry Streets in the Chinatown section of Philadelphia, right near the Chinatown bus stops and other convenient public transportation points, in what was the Megawords Storefront last September."

Doors open on Halloween with a Grand Opening celebration on Friday November 7th with art by William Boone and a performance by Howie Pyro and Kid Congo Powers.

Moby gets fucked up. Thursday, October 16th , 1:24 PM By: gibby
We love Moby. Aside from putting out great albums consistently and being a friendly, personable dude, occasionally he pops up and does hilarious shit like cover the Ramones with Fucked Up during their twelve hour show in Brooklyn.

Fucked Up's new album on Matador rules by the way.

More Info.
